In Praise of Humor
Several references to the humor of our Covenant forebears, well worth reading, may be found in Glad Hearts: The Joys of Believing and Challenges of Belonging (Covenant Publications, 2003), pp 453-462. See “Resources” Link on Home Page.
A more expansive source from which others here are drawn is Herbert Palmquist’s The Wit and Wisdom of Our Fathers (Covenant Press, 1967), as well as other books and periodicals which, like it, are now out of print. Another of our late pastors, C. Reuben Anderson, also self-published a booklet of stories, illustrations, notes and quotes titled Rambling with Reuben (1988?), from which I will be drawing.
Laugh a little! Learn a lot!
What follows are accounts from my own memory of the oral tradition in the Covenant over the years, as well as things I myself have experienced or heard from contemporaries inside and outside the Covenant Church.
Surely there is lasting spiritual value in maintaining one’s sense of humor. Brothers, sisters, events, and life circumstances of all kinds can enhance one’s joy in believing and belonging. So can it also free one up enough to laugh at his or her own foibles.
