Faint Praise

Herbert Palmquist tells in Wait for Me (Covenant Press, 1959) of a certain pastor’s resigning from his church. When he was leaving, one of the women of the congregation said to him, “Do you know, pastor, I’ve never liked you.” “You haven’t?” he answered, “then why have you thanked me every Sunday morning for my sermons?” “Oh,” she replied, “that’s just a little way we people have to encourage our pastor to do better.”
