I have learned over years that sermonizing is contextual. For me that has meant first and foremost dealing with each text in its own historic context, whether Old or New Testament. But it has also required dealing with the message of the text in light of life as we are experiencing it in our time and place. And, of course, because I believe so strongly that preaching and pastoral work must be done in concert, listening both to God’s voice and the voices of his people has been central to relevant communication.

Though not slavishly, I have generally followed the lectionary texts for each Sunday of the Church Year, partly to make sure I am addressing the whole counsel of God, but also to see each of the texts--Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel--in light of the whole of Scripture. Where thematic concerns led elsewhere, however, I have felt free to diverge from that path. I hope in either case that the sermons here included will reflect my passion for the high and holy calling of being both a preacher and a pastor.
